Description
This dataset is the resting-state EEG arm of the Dortmund Vital Study (DVS), a prospective, combined cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort study on the determinants of healthy cognitive aging across the adult working lifespan (Wascher et al., 2024; Gajewski et al., 2022). It was collected at the Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors (IfADo) at the Technical University of Dortmund, Germany. The published OpenNeuro release (“Resting-state EEG data before and after cognitive activity across the adult lifespan and a 5-year follow-up”) comprises 64-channel resting-state EEG from 608 healthy adults aged 20-70 years, recorded with eyes open and eyes closed both before and after a ~2-hour block of cognitive tasks; follow-up recordings ~5 years later are available for 208 of those participants (Wascher et al., 2024). The parent DVS protocol spans EEG, ECG, MRI, blood/genetic markers, and an extensive cognitive battery, with follow-up waves planned every 5 years through 2035 (Gajewski et al., 2022).

Data structure
Data are organized in BIDS v1.9.0 with raw, non-preprocessed EEG stored as EDF (*_eeg.edf) plus the standard BIDS sidecars (participants.tsv, *_eeg.json, *_channels.tsv, *_events.tsv).
The OpenNeuro snapshot is distributed via DataLad/git-annex like other OpenNeuro datasets; large EDFs are annexed.

Acquisition
Resting-state EEG was recorded on a BrainVision BrainAmp DC amplifier with BrainVision Recorder software (Brain Products GmbH) from a 64-channel elastic cap arranged according to the (extended) international 10-20 system (Wascher et al., 2024). The online reference was FCz; the descriptor names FCz as the on-line reference but does not separately document a ground electrode label. The sampling rate was 1000 Hz with a 250 Hz online low-pass filter and no online high-pass filter; electrode impedances were kept below 10 kΩ. Each resting-state condition was recorded for 3 minutes (~180 s). The parent protocol additionally describes a separate Day-2 BioSemi 32-channel / 2048 Hz montage, but the OpenNeuro release here is the Day-1 BrainAmp 64-channel resting-state data only.
Participants
Baseline (ses-1) comprises 608 participants, mean age 44.1 years (SD 14.5), range 20-70, of whom 376 (61.8%) are female and 232 (38.2%) male (Wascher et al., 2024). Handedness is 566 right-handed (93.1%), 40 left-handed (6.6%), and 2 unknown. The 5-year follow-up (ses-2) includes 208 participants (130 female [62.5%], 78 male [37.5%]); these are a re-recorded subset of the baseline cohort, with follow-up collection beginning in 2021. Participants are described as healthy working-age adults; detailed inclusion/exclusion criteria (e.g., absence of neurological/psychiatric disease) are specified in the parent protocol (Gajewski et al., 2022).
Tasks / conditions
The release contains four resting-state conditions per session: eyes closed and eyes open, each measured before (“pre”) and after (“post”) an intervening ~2-hour block of cognitive experimental tasks (Wascher et al., 2024). Here “pre”/“post” denote within-session timing relative to the cognitive battery — not the two longitudinal sessions. The two sessions are ses-1 (baseline, 608 subjects) and ses-2 (~5-year follow-up, 208 subjects). The intervening cognitive battery (part of the broader DVS Day-1/Day-2 protocol) covers attention, vigilance, conflict processing, working memory, task switching, executive function, and inhibitory control (Gajewski et al., 2022); only the resting-state segments are included in this EEG release.
