Description

This is the NIN V1_V4_1024_electrode_resting_state_data corpus — large-scale, high-density electrophysiological recordings from the visual cortex of two awake macaque monkeys, collected at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN, Amsterdam) and described in the data-descriptor paper “1024-channel electrophysiological recordings in macaque V1 and V4 during resting state” (Chen et al., 2022, Scientific Data). Sixteen Utah arrays (1,024 channels) were chronically implanted over primary visual cortex (V1) and area V4 in two male rhesus macaques, identified by the letters A and L. The full released corpus also includes receptive-field mapping (*_RF_*) and signal-to-noise (*_SNR_*) task sessions.

Data structure

The GIN repository is organized into code/ (analysis scripts), data/ (sessions grouped by subject and task), and metadata/ (compiled metadata), plus LICENSE, README.md, config.yml, and datacite.yml. Sessions follow the convention [Subject]_[TaskType]_[Date], e.g. resting-state sessions L_RS_250717, L_RS_090817, L_RS_100817 (Monkey L) and A_RS_140819, A_RS_150819, A_RS_160819 (Monkey A) — six resting-state sessions in all. Each session holds subdirectories for raw/ (continuous potentials), LFP/, MUAe/, and (resting-state only) eye_signals/. Processed data are provided in NIX (.nix) and MATLAB (.mat) formats; per-session metadata are in odML (.odml) with merged metadata plus .csv/.xls summaries.

Acquisition

Recordings used 16 Utah electrode arrays (Blackrock Microsystems), each an 8×8 grid of 64 iridium-oxide electrodes — 14 arrays in V1 and 2 arrays in V4, for 1,024 channels total (64 × 16). The signal chain ran 16 arrays → 8 CerePlex M headstages → 8 Digital Hubs → 8 Neural Signal Processors. The CerePlex M headstages applied a 0.3–7500 Hz analog filter at unity gain (no amplification). For referencing, reference wires were attached to every other array, each serving as the reference for two arrays, yielding eight reference wires in total.

Raw extracellular potentials were sampled at 30 kHz (released as Blackrock .ns6). The descriptor distributes two derived analog signals: LFP at 500 Hz (low-pass filtered at 150 Hz, 4th-order Butterworth) and the multiunit-activity envelope (MUAe) at 1 kHz (band-passed ~0.5–9 kHz with a 200 Hz low-pass envelope filter). For the resting-state sessions, eye signals (pupil diameter and gaze position) were also recorded to identify eye-closure epochs.

Resting-state recordings comprised three sessions per monkey. Monkey L sessions ran 22 min 42 s, 22 min 0 s, and 21 min 37 s (~66 min total); Monkey A sessions ran 32 min 34 s, 38 min 17 s, and 42 min 0 s (~113 min total). During resting state the lights were off and the animal performed no task, free to stay awake or fall asleep while pupil/gaze data tracked eye closure.

Participants

Two male rhesus macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta), referred to as Monkey A and Monkey L (Chen et al., 2022). At head-post implantation Monkey A was 4 years old (6.5 kg) and Monkey L was 5 years old (7.2 kg); by the time of visual-cortex array implantation both animals were 7 years old, weighing 11.0 kg (A) and 12.6 kg (L). These are healthy research animals — there is no clinical/patient group. All procedures complied with the relevant institutional and EU animal-welfare regulations as described in the source paper.

Tasks / conditions

The resting-state condition is task-free spontaneous activity recorded in darkness, with the animal allowed to remain awake or sleep — no explicit eyes-open / eyes-closed instruction, though eye-tracking allows post-hoc separation of eye-closure epochs. The broader GIN corpus additionally contains receptive-field mapping sessions (*_RF_*) and signal-to-noise / visual-stimulation sessions (*_SNR_*) used to characterize the arrays.

Caveats worth knowing

  • Penetrating Utah arrays in V1/V4, not surface ECoG.
  • Arousal uncontrolled (use eye signals).

Notable caveats

  • “ECoG” is a loose label here — these are penetrating Utah-array (intracortical) recordings of LFP/MUA in V1/V4, not surface electrocorticography over the whole hemisphere. Coverage is restricted to visual cortex, so the corpus is not whole-brain.
  • Resting state was recorded with lights off and no fixation requirement; arousal state is uncontrolled (the animal may sleep), so analyses should use the provided eye signals to gate awake vs. eye-closed/sleep epochs.
  • Reference scheme is shared across array pairs (eight reference wires for 16 arrays), which can introduce shared-reference correlations to account for in connectivity/coupling analyses. No online notch is documented beyond the 0.3–7500 Hz analog headstage filter; European mains line noise (50 Hz) should be checked/handled in processing.
